Queen Mab by thatpaperfox Queen Mab by thatpaperfox
The fairy Queen Meave/Mab/Medbeh.
Beautiful and seductive, yet terrible and deadly.

I love the art work, it is beautiful and evokes a certain sense of awe. But traditionally Meave and Mab are two separate entities. Meave is Mab's daughter and is more of a lustful persona.

Ah! Then I see Queen Mab hath been with you.
She is the fairies' midwife
And she come in shape no bigger than an agate stone
On the forefinger of an alderman...

Ahahaha this is awesome! I feel like a Shakespeare nerd. Thank you for bringing back good memories.

Haha, your welcome! I've never studied literature, but I've always been interested in English history especially during that of the medieval and victorian era - "For he to-day that sheds his blood with me, Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile.." (Henry V | Act 4, Scene 3) Shakespeare's version of Henry was awe inspiring, in contrast to what it may have been in actual historical context. :)

That's still on my list of Shakespeare plays to read. Queen Mab makes me think of Mercutio's speech in Romeo and Juliet, which was the first play I ever performed in, so your art reminded me of it. ^^

Gosh, your comment made me curious enough to read up a bit of the interpretation of Mercutio's speech in Romeo and Juliet.

According to sparksnote ([link]) -

"The words “quean” and “mab” were references to whores in Elizabethan England. In Queen Mab, then, Mercutio creates a sort of conceptual pun: he alludes to a mythological tradition peopled with fairies and attaches it to a reference to prostitutes. He yokes the childish fun of fairies to a much darker vision of humanity..." :O

"By the end of the speech, Queen Mab is the “hag” who teaches maidens to have sex. The child’s fairy tale has spun into something much, much darker, though this dark vision is an accurate portrayal of society."

Pretty deep and dark interpretation..
Just reading about it makes me giddy. Haha. :D

Oh wow. I didn't know the connection between Queen Mab and prostitutes. The whole teaching how to have sex part of the speech makes so much more sense! That's really interesting. Thank you for enlightening me! Haha I love when seemingly innocent or simple things can be twisted to be made darker! ><

Out of curiosity did you get the idea for this from a jim butcher book?

I was inspired by Brian Froud who is a English fantasy illustrator. I really love his illustrative pieces especially: The Faerie Queen, the cover of his "Brian Froud's World of Faerie".

Haha yeah, I love Venice especially during Mardi Gras. They have really beautiful masks. I thought it would be cool if it was used as a war ornament. Wouldn't it be terrifying to be killed by a faceless visage? :D
